The Experimental Glaucoma Research Group at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Hospital of Cologne and the Faculty of Medicine, headed by Univ.- Prof. Dr. Verena Prokosch, has received funding and awards.
The project “Crystalline as neuroprotective and neuroregenerative treatment strategies in experimental glaucoma” has received a grant of 201,000 Euros. This follows on seamlessly from previous funding for the project “Molecular Biomarkers in the Treatment of Experimental Glaucoma and Their Functional Impact on Apoptosis- and Regeneration-Related Signaling Pathways,” which detected Crystallins as important markers in glaucoma.
Dr. Hanhan Liu, a resident at the Department of Ophthalmology, was awarded the 2,500 Euro Glaucoma Research Prize of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) Glaucoma Section for the paper “Crystallins Play a Crucial Role in Glaucoma and Promote Neuronal Cell Survival in an In Vitro Model Through Modulating Müller Cell Secretion.”
Leila Frühn, PhD, received a PhD scholarship from the DOG for her dissertation topic “Regenerative Role of Crystalline” and Dr. Julia Prinz, Clinician Scientist, has received a scholarship from the DOG.
