Professor Heping Xu explains para-inflammation in the retina

Heping Xu (MD, PhD) is Professor of Ocular Immunology in the Centre for Experimental Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, UK. He was trained as an ophthalmologist and together with his former teacher and colleague John Forrester, he developed the concept of para-inflammation, a predisposing condition for many age-related diseases of the eye.

As a long-standing collaboration partner and visiting scientist, he was warmly welcomed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Langmann, vice speaker of the DFG research unit FOR2240 “Angiogenesis, lymph angiogenesis and cellular immunity in inflammatory diseases of the eye”. In his talk, Prof. Xu discussed recent concepts of retinal inflammation that are particularly related to aging and eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
